Dalam mengantisipasi bahaya yang ditimbulkan Gunung Merapi, pada bulan Mei 1993 telah dilakukan pemantauan tingkat aktivitas Gunung Merapi secara tepadu yaitu kimia, fisika, dan geologi. Pemantauan secara kimia meliputi kimia gas, kondensat, temperatur lubang gas vulkanik, batuan, udara bebas, merkuri, dan kecepatan emisi gas S02 dalam plume vulkanik.
