To geologist, the field is where rocks or soils can be observed in place, and field geology consist of the methods used to examines and interpret structures and materials at the outcrop. The geologist is concerned with every aspect of the composition and structure of the earth’s crust. His sphere of work is therefore worldwide; his main laboratory is he great out of doors where in examines rocks as they actually occur in nature.
Geology has evolved greatly since I wrote the manual of field geology in the 1950’s. Advances in theory have transformed the formation mapping of the time into increasingly broader and more interpretive studies. We have much to seek at the outcrop and the rising costs of field work compel us to recognize key features the first time around.

Viewing an erupting volcano is a memorable experience, one that has inspired fear, superstition, worship, curiosity and fascination throughout the history of mankind. In modern times, volcanic phenomena have attracted intense scientific interest, because they provide the key to understanding processes that have created and shaped more than 80 percent of the Earth’s surface.
Most of the Earths mountains, valley and plains have been slowly sculpted by uplift and erosion ever that last million years, and these, in turn, have formed from other landscape long vanished. Volcanoes though, operate on a different time scale.
