Gunungapi kelut merupakan salah satu gunungapi aktif berbentuk strato dan menurut klasifikasi aktivitas termasuk tipe A [Kusumadinata, 1979]. Gunung kelut juga merupakan salah satu gunungapi yang mempunyai danau kawah dipuncaknya, luas danau kawah lebihkurang 400000 meter persegi dengan volume air lebih kurang 2,5-3 juta meter kubik.

Terletak dalam wilayah kabupaten Bondowoso dan banyuwangi Jawa Timur. Gunungapi ini muncul di lereng sebelah barat kompleks Kawah Ijen, dengan tinggi puncaknya 3332 m diatas permukaan laut. Kawah G. Raung terletak di bagian dasar kalderanya dan sampai sekarang masih memperlihatkan aktifitas yaitu ditandai dengan adanya hembusan solfatara/fumarola.
