the ombilin coal mine is situated in the sawahlunto-sidjundjung district in the province of west-sumatra.The field in which coal is expected to occure occoupics an area of 7,5 x10 km2 with its lengthaxis in north -south direction.
to-day metallurgical eoke is practically exlusively produced from coking coals in horizontal chamber ovens the dimensions of which show a height of 2-6 m, an average chamber width of 350 - 550 mm and a chamber length of ab. 12 m
The eocene (Early Tertiery) coal deposits on The ombilin river in central sumatra have been discovered in 1868 by de greve, mapped in 1875 by verbeek and their extraction was begun in 1892 in the vicinity of sawahlunto.
The geological structure of Sumatra is mirorred on a small scale in the range of islands west of it. it is ummistakable that the tendency of the longitudinal chains of sumatra to subside to the SE is observable again on the long range of islands which lies paralel to sumatra in the SW, separated by a "longitudinal depression" which surpasses by widt…
The mapped area covers the sheets XXVIII, XXIX, XXXVIII and XXXIX of the topographycal map of south sumatra, scale 1:100.000. it can easily be reached by motor-car by the road from tanjoeng-karang to enggala, or by boat with the ships of the K.P.M via the Toelang bawang river to benggala.
Geological data concerning the area covered by this map sheet were not avallable before the beginning of the geological survey Verbex (1881,1) largely as alluvium and for a small part in the SW as marind diluvium, by hartman (1915,2)
thi sheet includes the topographic mapsheets 1:100.000 no. XVII, XVIII, XXIV, and XXV. previous data are given by verbeek (lit.8), ERB (3), Moerman (5) and Philippy (6,7)
following the review of all existing geological data on the contract areas outside of kelapa kempit a scheduls of areas to be retained and areas to be relinquiabed has beeb prepared.table 2 refers.
