The Center for Mineral Resources, Coal, and Geothermal (PSDMBP) of the Geological Agency held a seminar and workshop titled “Automated Mineralogy: A New Era in Mineral Characterization” on Tuesday, July 15th, 2025. The event took place in the Aurum Room, 4th Floor of Building D, PSDMBP, and was attended by 93 participants.
The participants came from diverse backgrounds, including government agencies such as the Geological Survey Center (PSG), TekMIRA, LEMIGAS, and BRIN; academic institutions such as the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) and the Indonesian University of Education (UPI); and as well as mining companies and analytical service laboratories such as PT Freeport Indonesia, PT Antam Tbk, PT Sucofindo, and others.
As stated by the Chairperson of the Event, this event was a collaboration between PSDMBP and PT Dynatech International. This event aimed to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of the fundamentals and applications of automated mineralogy using SEM-EDS and MAPS Mineralogy. This technology now plays a crucial role in the geosciences, particularly in the rapid and high-precision identification, mapping, and analysis of minerals.
The event was officially opened by the Head of PSDMBP, Agung Pribadi, who emphasize the importance of transforming geological laboratories through the adoption of advanced technologies. In his opening remarks, he highlighted that enhancing laboratory capacity is essential for efficient and reliable resource exploration and represents PSDMBP’s active support for Indonesia’s energy transition and the national commitment to achieving net-zero emissions.
The technical session began with a presentation by Nelly Susanna from PSDMBP, who introduced the institution’s laboratory facilities, detailing its structural organization, analytical methods, accreditation status, service types, and testing fees, which reflect PSDMBP’s commitment to transparency and high standards in public service delivery.
Following this, two speakers from Thermo Fisher Scientific, Echo Gao and Angela Hu, presented the latest innovations in mineral characterization. Echo Gao highlighted the use of Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Small Dual Beam (SDB) technology in geological applications. Angela Hu then introduced a multiscale analysis approach that integrates data from SEM, SDB, and computed tomography (CT), offering a more comprehensive understanding of mineralogical structures. Both speakers demonstrated how automated mineralogy enhances the efficiency and accuracy of mineral analysis across a range of geoscience and mining applications.
In addition to the lecture sessions, participants were invited to observe a live demonstration of the automated mineralogy equipment at the PSDMBP laboratory. Split into two sessions, the demonstration sessions allowed participants to gain hands-on insights into the precision and technological sophistication of the mineral analysis process.
Through this event, PSDMBP reaffirmed its position as a technical institution actively engaged in the development of modern and standardized geological laboratory services. The integration of automated mineralogy is expected to play a pivotal role in strengthening the quality of geological investigations and optimizing the sustainable use of Indonesia’s mineral resources.
Menyongsong Era Baru Karakterisasi Mineral
Pusat Sumber Daya Mineral Batubara dan Panas Bumi (PSDMBP), Badan Geologi, menyelenggarakan Seminar dan Workshop bertajuk “Automated Mineralogy: A New Era in Mineral Characterization” pada Selasa, 15 Juli 2025. Bertempat di Ruang Aurum, Gedung D Lantai 4 Kantor PSDMBP, kegiatan ini dihadiri oleh 93 peserta.
Para peserta berasal dari beragam latar belakang, mulai dari lembaga pemerintah seperti Pusat Survei Geologi (PSG)-Badan Geologi, TekMIRA, LEMIGAS, dan BRIN; institusi pendidikan seperti Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) dan Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI); hingga perusahaan pertambangan dan laboratorium jasa analisis seperti PT Freeport Indonesia, PT Antam Tbk, PT Sucofindo, dan lainnya.
Sebagaimana disampaikan Ketua Pelaksana Kegiatan, Larasati, seminar ini merupakan hasil kolaborasi antara PSDMBP dan PT Dynatech International. Tujuan diselenggarakannya kegiatan ini adalah untuk memberikan pemahaman komprehensif mengenai prinsip dasar dan aplikasi teknologi automated mineralogy berbasis SEM-EDS dan MAPS Mineralogy. Teknologi tersebut kini memegang peranan penting dalam dunia geosains, khususnya dalam proses identifikasi, pemetaan, dan analisis mineral secara cepat dan presisi tinggi.
Acara dibuka secara resmi oleh Kepala PSDMBP, Agung Pribadi, yang menekankan pentingnya transformasi laboratorium geologi melalui pemanfaatan teknologi canggih. Dalam sambutannya, ia menyoroti bahwa penguatan kapasitas laboratorium dapat memenuhi kebutuhan eksplorasi sumber daya secara efisien dan andal, sekaligus sebagai bagian dari kontribusi PSDMBP dalam kerangka mendukung agenda nasional menuju transisi energi dan pencapaian target net zero emission.
Rangkaian materi diawali dengan paparan dari Nelly Susanna (PSDMBP), yang memperkenalkan fasilitas laboratorium PSDMBP serta berbagai layanan analisis mineral yang disediakan. Ia menjelaskan struktur laboratorium, metode analisis yang digunakan, status akreditasi, hingga jenis layanan beserta tarif pengujiannya, sebagai wujud transparansi dan profesionalisme dalam pelayanan publik di PSDMBP.
Selanjutnya, dua narasumber dari Thermo Fisher Scientific, Echo Gao dan Angela Hu, membagikan perkembangan terbaru teknologi karakterisasi mineral. Echo Gao memaparkan aplikasi Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) dan Small Dual Beam dalam studi geologi, sedangkan Angela Hu memperkenalkan pendekatan analisis multiskala yang mengintegrasikan data dari SEM, SDB, dan computed tomography (CT). Keduanya menyoroti potensi besar teknologi automated mineralogy dalam meningkatkan efisiensi dan akurasi karakterisasi mineral di berbagai bidang, termasuk eksplorasi dan industri tambang.
Selain sesi materi, peserta mengikuti demonstrasi langsung penggunaan peralatan automated mineralogy di laboratorium PSDMBP. Demonstrasi dibagi dalam dua sesi kunjungan, sehingga para peserta mendapatkan gambaran nyata mengenai proses analisis mineral otomatis berbasis teknologi tinggi yang dijalankan secara presisi.
Dengan terselenggaranya kegiatan ini, PSDMBP meneguhkan posisinya sebagai institusi teknis yang berperan aktif dalam pengembangan layanan laboratorium geologi yang modern dan terstandardisasi. Dalam hal automated mineralogy, teknologi ini diharapkan menjadi motor penggerak dalam peningkatan kualitas penyelidikan geologi serta pemanfaatan sumber daya mineral Indonesia secara lebih efektif, akurat, dan berkelanjutan.
