early workn by geoglogists of the ducth east indian geological survey has shown that coal accurs all along the tertiary margins of the tigapuluh hountains. although none of the recorded coal accurrence seems to have great economic potential it was thought that this region deserved further, more detailed, investigation.
During may and june of 1972 Dr. Magraw of the national coal board visited sumatera to assessthe potential of the island's coal resources and visit some occurrences, in consequenco of this study by Dr. Magraw, was drawn up and implemented by Mr. fleming in August for the same year.
From 24 th november to 2 nd december 1972 reconnaissance geological mapping was carried out in the "Tebo Area", which is located between the bungo and siminar coal basins (see location map, fig.1). the objective of this survey was to find out if the coal which is present in the latter two areas continues along strike.
