PROPOSED COOPERATIVE STUDY FOR FELDSPAR BENEFICIATION FROM LIPARITIC TUFFS OF NORTH SUMATRA, INDONESIA
The rapid growth of Indonesia’s ceramic industry has led to increasing demand for feldspar, prompting the Directorate of Mineral Resources to investigate feldspar resources in Sumatra, Java, and Kalimantan. Preliminary results indicate that, in addition to pegmatites, several other feldspathic rocks—namely feldspar sands, arkosic sandstones, and liparitic tuffs—have potential as feldspar ores. Feldspar sand deposits along the Medan coast represent a significant resource; however, their exploitation may cause serious environmental impacts. These sands are derived from the liparitic tuff of the Toba Tuff Formation. Direct utilization of the widely distributed liparitic tuff as a feldspar source is therefore considered a more environmentally acceptable alternative.
