Geology basics for engineers

Parraux, Aurele - Nama Orang;

This book was first published in French in 2006 by the Presses polytechnique et universi• taires romande (PPUR). In 2010 a new edition of the French version was published. This new version was published by CRC Press and translated into English by Patricia Bobeck. In 2017, CRC press asked me to write a new edition of the English version. This book is the fruit of my experience teaching geology at the Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL). Since
1991, I have taught the basics of geology to civil and environmental engineering students. This is challenging because of difficult pedagogical conditions due to the heavy course load of the first year of the curriculum, the various career plans of the students, and an enrolment of more than 100 students. It was necessary early in the process to create course materials that corre• sponded to the particular needs of engineers, without delving too much into engineering geol• ogy per se, which is the subject of a course for more advanced students. Thus, my staff and I drafted the first version of a course guide for internal use. It was the basis for a course that included extensive student participation in numerous exercises to promote mastery through problem solving. This internal document caught the attention of the management of the Presses Polytechniques et Universitaires Romandes (PPUR) who asked me if I would turn it into a "real book" to be offered to a larger audience than the EPFL. The favorable publishing con• ditions offered by the Presses Polytechniques et Universitaires Romandes, the EPFL, and the Natural, Architectural and Constructed Environment (ENAC) School won me over and together we created a true partnership. I thank my colleagues Manfred A. Hirt, author of the Treatise on Civil Engineering, Mr. Olivier Babel, Director of PPUR, and my colleague Laurent Vulliet, then Dean of the ENAC faculty.
To create the first edition, the Environmental and Engineering • Geology Laboratory (GEOLEP), under my direction, labored for more than a year. to produce a manuscript wor• thy of inclusion in the prestigious PPUR collection. The project involved the adaptation of the internal course guide into a central part of the EPFL academic environment while at the same time maintaining its original pedagogical concept. The work group included Laurie Cortesi, my primarily collaborator on this project to whom I express my most sincere gratitude. The book owes much to her. She participated actively in the review of the text and brought her personal contribution to it, in particular, her scientific contributions enriched the chapters on mineralogy and magmatism. She also coordinated the revision of a multitude of photographs and figures that embellish the text and improved them significantly by turning them into color illustrations. She very capably managed the flow of data between the publisher and our group. Her scientific and human qualities were vital to the success of the process. The GEOLEP edit• ing group included three other people who contributed with their geologic and computer sci• ence abilities' to create the animations that appear on the accompanying DVD:• Severine Bilgot, Gregory Grosjean, and Laurent Tacher. Tamara Lema very capably and insightfully tracked down, detected, and identified the inevitable misprints in the manuscript. Several student assis• tants also collaborated on the project Giuseppe: Lea Herzig, Aude Dessauge, and Alexandre
. Monnin. I owe gratitude to all of them, and to Giuseppe Franciosi who was my principal col•
laborator during the internal document period and who contributed immensely to its prepara• tion. I also express my thanks to my colleagues Francois Frey and Peter Egger who kindly reread some passages. My thanks also go to PPUR and their openness to the particularities of the very diverse and rich discipline that is geology.
