Minerals and metals development and trade for sustainable supply in Asia and the Pasific
With the rapid economic growth experienced in the Asian and Pacific region, prior to the economic , crisis in 1997 the demand for minerals for both industrial applications and construction of infrastructure facilities showed a significant increase. Accordingly, most of the member and associate member countries of ESCAP showed a keen interest in development of mineral resources to ensure a sustainable supply. This publication is an outcome of the Workshop on Sustainable Minerals Supply in Asia and the Pacific Region that was convened by ESCAP from 3 to 5 November 1997 at the United Nations Conference Centre at Bangkok.
Part one of this publication includes a study conducted by Allen L. Clark from PACRIM Resources Ltd. of Hawaii, who was engaged as an ESCAP consultant and covers the minerals and metals trade for a sustainable supply in selected countries of East, North-East and South-East Asia. The papers presented by the representatives from the relevant participating countries are also included. Part two contains a study conducted by Daya Dhaon, Managing Director of Delhi Consulting Group Pvt., Ltd. on behalf of ESCAP. The study includes the minerals and metals trade for sustainable supply in Australia, Myanmar, Papua New Guinea and selected countries of South and West Asia. The relevant papers from the participating countries of this subregion are also included.
