Review of policies, strategies and activities in sustainable development of land and mineral resources in Asia and the Pasific

Economic and Social Commission For Asia and The Pasific - Nama Orang;

With the emergence of the ASEAN countries as one of the most rapidly-growing economies in the world (7% average annual growth over the last 5 years), a lot of attention has been drawn on the success factors that propelled this remarkable phenomenon. Energy has been talked about as a contributing factor to this• sustained pattern of economic growth. Ironically, it is also seen as a potential threat when surely and inevitably, the reserves which are abundantly available in ASEAN now are depleted. Energy management then becomes an imperative move in the region.
Along this challenge and threat to the region, the ASEAN-EC Energy Management Training and Research Centre (AEEMTRC) seeks to assist the energy decision-makers and policy-makers, officials of energy bodies and utilities, energy practitioners (engineers, researchers, planners, etc.) towards evolving an ASEAN-oriented energy management system and efficient methodologies,
A requisite tool for this is an up-to-date, accurate, objective, and easily understood energy data and database. During AEEMTRC's 1st phase (1988-1993) the Centre published many new publications concerning energy in ASEAN. Though varied in its titles and contents, they were all centered around energy management especially on the issue of achieving energy efficiency as a high priority in the ASEAN region.
This is the first edition of the Energy in ASEAN: Country Profiles (EACP). With this publication, the Centre has now two complementary books on the energy situation in the ASEAN region: the ASEAN Energy Review (AER) which provides quantitative data on the production, transformation and consumption of thefour main energy forms i.e., oil, gas, coal and electricity and EACP which translates the data and trends in the AER into maps, charts, organigrams, and texts.
