Asia-Pasific workshop on coal mining technology in Tokyo 1996

Coal consumption in Japan is expected to increase. Since a major portion of the domestic coal consumption relies on overseas supply sources, it is extremely important for us to secure a stable supply of coal from abroad. For this reason, the participation of Japanese coal mines m overseas coal development projects and technical cooperation with overseas coal producers has markedly increased in recent years. We consider that such technical cooperation in mine safety technology with the coal producers from other countries, contributes not only to the stable production of coal in the country concerned, but also to a stable supply of coal for our country. For instance, the co~prehensive coal development technology program currently promoted by the Coal Department, Agency of Natural Resources and Energy in coalproducing countries of the AsiaPacific region is a comprehensive coal development program incorporating coal mine safety technology and designed with the foregoing viewpoint in mind. This program is expected to have an even greater effect on technical cooperation than conventional programs.
