ASEAN energy review 1997
This volume is the sixth in a series of publications of the ASEAN Energy Review (AER) on the energy situation in ASEAN which AEFMTRC publishes yearly. The Centre maintains and vpdates an energy database of the seven ASEAN countrie's which includes data on primary energy supply, energy transformation and demand and consumption in the oil, gas, coal and electricity sectors which is used in framing the national energy balance table for each A SEAN member states, as well as the overall regional energy picture/or ASEAN
1he AER is one of the two major complimentary books on the energy situation in the A SEAN region: the Energy In ASEAN: Country Profiles (EACP) which translates the data and trendsfrom the AER into maps, charts, diagrams, and texts. The AER which would be useful to government energy agencies, private sector, research activities and academe and ASEAN dialogue partners provides a strategic importance in the dissemination of up-to-date and relevant information on the curtent energy situation of the initial six ASEAN Member Countries, namely Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. Due to data limitation, only the 1995 energy-related data for Vietnam had been. included in this edition. The data of the latest ASEAN Member Countries i.e. Laos P.D.R and Myanmar is not included in this edition. It will, however be incorporated in the next and future editions.
The yearly publication of the AER is an outgrowth of AEEMTRC's ASEAN Energy Database and Analysis Programme (AEDAP). The AEDAP has been established in 1997 to replace the ASEAN Energy Database and it is subsumed under the Centre's Research Division. This was done to emphasise the value of energy data that have been regularly endorsed and officially. supplied by energy Departments and Ministries through networks of focal points in the ASEAN region.
The ASEAN region has been very dynamic since the publication of the first AER in this series in 1991. The method of analysis upon which this review is based have accordingly been improved and refined• The AER includes not only a sifnple analysis of data but accentuates in-depth probing into the various key elements of issues and challenges found in energy policies, energy business and economics, and energy politics. The key challenge of the preparation of the AER revolves around/the key-results of data integration, analysis and discussion from a regional perspective. However, there are still a lot of improvements that have to be introduced to fully satisfy the data requirements of the region's energy sector. Nonetheless, a comprehensive report of the region's energy situation is accurately presented in each chapter.
The objective of the AEDAP is to improve the flow of information on energy through a reliable data collection from regional networks consisting of focal points as well as the coordination of existing information systems and services: The information and database from which the AER has been generated are intended to facilitate the availability of information and transfer to energy information users.
