Prospective of base metal minerals in Indonesia

Djaswadi, Sukirno - Nama Orang;

Geology and tectonic setting of the Indonesia region are parts of the crustal plates evolution products occurred in the marginal continents of Asia and Australia. This situation has created two distinct environments of mineralization systems, i.e. continental and arc island mineralization systems. Metallic mineralization types in the Eastern parts of Sumatera, Kalimantan, lrian Jaya, and Timor are • generally the products of the continent-crustal plates collisions. Base metal minerals in the regions occur commonly as skarn, vein and porphyry types associated with the Paleozoic - Mesozoic sedimentary and Mesozoic - Cenozoic acid-intermediate intrusive rocks. Porphyry, massive sulphide and vein types are commonly deposited in the inner zones of the arc system and they are generally hosted by intermediate to basic intrusive and related volcanic rocks of Mesozoic to Cenozoic ages. These types distribute over the Western part of Sumatera, Java, Molucca, Sulawesi and Nusa Tenggara. Excluding tin deposits, there are 28 sulphide deposits that have been discovered since the Dutch time. The total reserves are approximately 1.4 billion tonnes of ore which is equal to 10.2 million tonnes Cu, 685 thousand tonnes Pb, 1.3 million tonnes Zn, 6.3 million tonnes Hg, 120 thousand Mo, 828 tonnes Au and 1.8 thousand tonnes• Ag. Two porphyry-type deposits, namely Grasberg and Ertsberg, in Papua are among the major copper-gold producers, currently being mined by PT. Freeport Indonesia. In addition, at least 15 promising/ prospective areas should be followed up by further exploration works, These selected prospects are recommended based on the study of various aspects of geology, tectonics and mineralization characteristics. The potential zones may be divided into four groups; each group represents different types of deposits and ore grade. These may be recommended for the future exploration works for base metal minerals. They are listed below:
