Oil shale is one of alternative energy to substitute the conventional oil. In Indonesia, oil shales are found in many places, including Silat Shale of Upper Eocene. The studies of organic geochemistry and oil content were performed on this formation in Nanga Silat area of Kapuas Hulu Regency with purposes to determine the abundance, type, thermal maturity, oil quantity, origin and depositional environment of organic material contained in rock samples. The methods used were to analyze, compile, and estimate the results of the total organic carbon, retorts, pyrolysis, extraction and gas chromatography. Cross plot between PY vs. TOC, HI vs. OI, and Tmax vs. HI and the result of retort analysis showed that the organic material has good to very good potential to produce hydrocarbons, as well as type II (oil prone) and type III (gas prone) kerogen at early mature stage. The average number of produced oil content is 4.55 liters/ton of rock. The chromatographic analysis shows that the normal alkanes configuration form has two peaks (bimodal type), namely C17 and C27, C17 and C28, C17 and C23, as well as the cross plot between pristane/nC17 vs. phytane/nC18 indicates that the organic material in the area is derived from a mixture of higher altitude plants and algae in the oxidized and reduced conditions.
