Sulawesi Island is geologically very interesting because of its typical geological position. Among others, a good understanding of the formation of Sulawesi Island contributes greatly to the SI development of the theory of plate movement which is also related to the discovery of one of important mineral resources, nickel. Geological knowledge of the island of Sulawesi is continuously improved through a series of • explorations and exploitation, which have made this island as an important producer oflateritic nickel. In addition, a number of other minerals, such as gold and silver, is also produced from this island. This fact suggests that a good understanding of the geological position and records of exploration results provide an important contribution to the discovery of minerals on the island of Sulawesi.
This book reaffirms the importance of understanding of the geological setting and history of mineral exploration, including the types and patterns of mineral deposits on the island of Sulawesi. Generally, this book will provide a knowledge of mineral occurrences in Sulawesi Island and surrounding areas for student and postgraduate, as well as practitioners and stakeholders in mineral exploration. Furthermore, this book will contribute to resource mapping in conjunction with efforts to increase value-added minerals currently related to the demand of the Law on Mineral and Coal in Indonesia.
