Reports of the DCGM-IV project of the "Asia geothermal database"

Geological Survey of Japan - Nama Orang;

The CCOP Digital Compilation of Geoscientific Maps (DCGM) Phase IV Project started on April 2001 and ended on March 2004, aiming to compile databases on Groundwater and Geothermal in East and Southeast Asia. The participating countries into this project are Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam. This issue reports the "Asia Geothermal Database" project and, as a summary of the project, introduces papers related to geothermal databases and resources in the situation up to 2005 by the national compilers of the member countries. The number of the papers edited here is 12 from the CCOP Secretariat and 10 member countries, with selected image files (appendix) outputted from a prototype database formed through the compilation of data that were provided by the national compilers. Current development of information technology is rapid and gives us much advantage for its dissemination. Geological data, on the other hand, are collected by a manual process and compiled on a printed-map. Since the requirement of digital form data increases, digitization of the printed-map has been attractive. The Phase I of DCGM started in 1993 with the compilation of geological map in East and Southeast Asia. Through the DCGM project, digital form datasets of marine sediments and aggregate resources, urban geoscientific information, besides geological maps were published. The advantages of the digital datasets are easy re-production, easy dissemination, and easy up-dating. Disadvantage is that we need computer facility to handle them. Rapid development of information technology offers many opportunities to access the datasets through internet; however, we also need an advanced computer facility with reliable security for datasets. By compiling digital datasets, we catch up the advanced computing infrastructure and applications to geoscience issues in the Asian region.
