As a part of a long-term project of silica sand exploration, KIER investigated beach and dune sands on Nammyeon, Anmyeon Island, and Weonsan Island, Chungcheongnamdo, Korea, in 1982. the investigation aimed at searching for and evaluating silica sand, and understanding the sedimentological properties of sediments and the depositional environment of the area. The investigated dunes and beachs, facing the Yellow Sea, are located in the northern part of west coast of Korea. The geology of the area consists of granitic (Weonsan Island) and metamorphic rocks. Strong tidal currents (130 to 180 cm/sec, northwesterly to southwesterly) were reported at an adjacent intertidal flat. Most of the beachs in the area slope seaward at around 2 degrees.
