Perlite: a raw material with industrial potential

Perlite is a glassy yolcanic rock which will upon Tap id and controlled heating, expand or ''pop" into a frothy aterial of low bulk density -valued as a lightweight aggregate. Perlite is mined by open pit methods; milling procedures are simple and perlite is processed or "popped" furnaces. Transportation of unexpanded perlite by rail or truck is a significant economic factor. Because of its physical and chemical properties: low bulk density, low thermal conductivity, high resistance to fire and low sound transmission, uses of expanded perlite are many and varied: aggregate and insulating material in the construction industry [60 % of the production), loose fill insulation in cavity walls [tankers, reservoirs), low temperatu;e insulation [cryogenics), fire proofing, horti• cultural aggregate, excellent filter (_oil, water), excellent filler, diluter and carrier of insecticides, herbicides, fertilizers, others uses as extenders in paints, enamels, glazes, plastics, resins rubber, abrasive, etc.
Pumice, pumicite and volcanic cinders may be used as substitutes. In conclusion it is highly recommended that a preliminary survey should be carried out at the different perlite sites.
