India has finalized plans to begin a massive magnetite ore mining project which will use some of the most sophisticated mining and refining operations to date. The Kudremukh Iron Ore Project, a cooperative trade agreement between Iran and India, will allow India to tap her vast mineral reserves and export the end product to Iran. HE KUDREMUKH iron ore project will have a major impact ' on the people in the southern region of India due to the tremendous industrial activity and em• ployment opportunities created by the extensive Kudremukh Iron Ore Project now underway, with the first shipment to Iran due in 1980. The Kudremukh iron ore deposits, named after the highest peak in the K udrem u kh-Aroli-Gangam ula range along the Western Ghats (mountains), are 64 km northeast of the Port of Mangalore on In• dia's southwest coast (Figure 1 .). Longitudinally, the ore body ex• tends over a six km length, and lat• erally, covers.a distance of 800 m.
Although iron ore deposits are available in a large number of places in this region, the particular ore found at the Kudremukh area is a high grade magnetite iron ore; low in alumina and silica, and rela• tively free from other deleterious elements, such• as sulphur and phosphorous.
