This morning (afternoon), we will discuss the various types of equipment used for the recovery of valuable- minerals from their ores. These minerals may be physically or chemically liberated from their host material and, in general, the same type of equipment is used in both process~s. Before discussing the particular machinery used for processing ores, some general comments may be helpful. First, ore plants •vary in size. For example, with small deposits of high-grade ore, the •plant may be of a size to treat only a few tons per day - whereas, with large, low-grade deposl'ts, the plant may be capable of treating as much as 95,000 tons per day. So, you can see from these examples that the equipment must be built in a wide range of sizes and types to acconmodate the various plant capa- cities and types of minerals. A divided feed to more than one piece of equipment - doing the same job - is necessary in the very large plants. Such equipment is very expensive and often weighs many tons. The electric motors require large quantities of electric power to operate the equipment used in the mining industry.
