Prospek pertambangan mineral kuarsa
Quartz sand based on its properties or characteristics could be used in the industry of glass, glass palte, cement, ceramics, metal casting, etc. Indonesia has a large potential of quartz sand with the deposits spread out in 56 locations within 16 provinces in Indonesia. The total reserve ia estimated to amount of 4.48 billion tons. Most to them are located in West Sumatera (72. 76 %).
The development of its production and consumption during the period of 1980 - 1988 indicated some increasing trend with the the growth rate of 18.04 % and JJ.63 % per annum respectively. Meanwhile, during that period the development of export and import presented the fluctuative pat• tern, and even the export tended to decrease.
The supply and demand ballance had shown the shortage of supply during that period: This was caused by incomplementness of the production data due to being unrecorded data ofproduction of some quartz sand producers. Hence, this conclusion is not yet capable of precasting the real ones.
• From the resources point of view quartz sand is one of the prospective minerals in Indonesia. It is so from the demand point of view. Cement industry is stillpredicted to be one of the main consum• ers of this commodity. The total demand of cement industry for quartz sand is estimated to amount to 1.2 to 1.8 million tons in 1995 and 1.6 to 2.6 million tons by 2000. Due to the self suffi• ciency of this industry, the other quartz sand producers would find difficulty in supplying this com• modity to that industry.
The other industries which are also the main consumers of quarts sand are .glass & its articles, and glassplate industries. The total demand of these industries in 1995 are estimated to amount to 300 thousand to 1 million tons for glass and its articles and 210 to 960 thousand tons for glass plate. While, in 2000 the estimation is to amount to 393 thousand to 2.9 million tons, and 266 to 960 thousand tons respectively. And hence, the development of quartz sand mining should be marketed to these industries. This is supported by the quartz sand prices, applied to those sectors, which are high and tend to increase.
The development under the export oriented seems to have a difficulty over expension due to the strong competitiveness of the quartz sand of other countries, such as Malaysia, and Australia which are the major exporters of this commodity to Japan in which this country is the major impor- - . ter, of of the Indonesian quartz sand, hence, the development of quartz sand should be directed to fulfil the industrial demand, especially the industry with export oriented.
