Operational research its application in the ceramic industry
Operational Research was born in the chaos of war but h~!,;boon matured in industry and peace. Now approaching manhood it is yet another tool of effective Management, attempting to provide the best decision relative to the information provided. In some circumstances O.R, cannot specify an optimum solution because one.or more of the essential aspects of the problem cannot be evaluat• ed within the limitations imposed upon the problem. In such cases it stresses that inadequate information is available rather than that a poor solution is attainable. Operational Research is characterised by its application of scientific methods, techniques and tools to Management problems involving optimisation rather than simple solutions. It makes use specifically of statistical methods to improve productivity, reduce loss and minimize costs. Other pe?ple have used it for problems associated with inventory control, allocation of resources, waiting• time, •replacement policies. or competitive strategy. Statistics is the study of the collection, analysis and interpretation of numerical data. Collection of data is all important but the random collection of figures regardless of their final use is merely a waste of time.
