Industrial mineral industries in Indonesia are facing a lot problems that exhibited their developments. For a deve• loping country such as Indonesia these problems should be resolved as soon as possible. Moreover now Indonesia has started to enter the take-off phase in term of the national development. It means that Indonesia will become a leading industrial country.

There is tremendous potential for industrial mineral exploitation in Indonesia which has not fully developed its resources yet. However. progress has been made in recent years by the government to promote the private companies to carry out industrial mineral exploitation. The well known industrial minerals having good prospects are calcium carbonate. feldspar and fire brick raw materials. especial• ly the basic one.

Calcium carbonate is not just for portland cement raw material. but also for other industries such as coating and filler for paper, plasti_c. PVC, paint. cosmetic. etc. Recent ly Indonesia is predicted import end-products of calcium car• bonate such as queensgate, snowcool, litocarb. etc. that are mostly derived from ground limestone, more than 800,000 tons yearly. Feldspar has good opportunity to fulfil the domestic demand for various c-eramic industries that are developed very fastly in the last decade. Most feldspar for this purpose are imported. although several good deposits are recorded.

So far no basic refractory brick industries are recorded in' Indonesia, instead of the e c i-d one. To fulfil the domes--tic _demands for many heat consuming industries Indonesia has imported the materials from other countries. mostly from th-e United Kingdom. It is predicted that Indonesia need more than
1.500,.000 tons of refractory br-i cks yearly to fulfil the do _mestic demands
