The 3 R'S of petroleum exploration: resources, risks and rewards
Petroleum exploration comprises a many-facet~d activity. It is a complex mix of science and technology, operating in a complex economic and political matrix. I will review some of the basic aspects of petroleum geology, economics and politics which in- fluence this world-wide activity. I hope that such a rev_iew may be of some value to some of you, especially in viewing exploration in the context of changing world supplies and demands for petroleum.
Much petroleum has been generat~d and trapped in near-surface sedimentary rocks by unique•geologic conditions, which have occured at only very localized places on the Earth. It has become exceedingly useful as an inexpensive and efficient source of energy for transportation, the generation of electricity, and a host of domestic and industrial pur- poses. However, since it is an exhaustible natural resource, it cannot last forever on this finite planet if per capita demand continues to increase. Of course, deJM.nd will decrease and use patterns will change as costs become exorbitant, and/or better sources
of energy become available; therefore, some petroleum that could be produced will always remain in the ground. But until other economic energy sources are developed, it is desirable to :maintain, or improve, the economic and political conditions which stimulate world-wide petroleum exploration, for the benefit of all mankind •
