Mineral provinces and their connec-tions to phases of nountain building in Indonesia have been proposed by WESTERVELD (J. WESTERVELD,1952). Mineral deposits characterizing certain orogonic belt, are. grouped into one pr-ovfnco., The Malaya orogen (Lats-Jurassic) is charactarizcd by cassitorite bearing pegmatites and veins. Pyrouotasonatic iron and copper ores are generally connected to the Sumatra orogen (Upper Cra;taceous). The•Maluku orogen (Late Greta-caoue - Middle Miocene:) is c:haracterizod by the developuent of lateritic iron ores and silicate nickel ores. Epithernal gold - silver veins are important metallic deposits along the western coaat of South Suoatra and Southern Mountains of Java (Sund.a orogen; Middle Miocene).
Younger Tertiary to Quaternary epithernal gail.d - silver bearing veins, occur in the western part of the islands. The tectonically separate unit of West Irian is characterized by lateritic deposits at the northern part and gold - silver - copper deposits at the central range This paper presents nevi finding of mineral occurrences during the c:ourso of prospecting and recc:onaissance work by tl'!e Geological Survey of Indonesia, which ha-s taken WESTERVELD's concepts as a w.orking hypothesia... The concepts are generally valid despite lack
