Indonesia is an archipelago comprising more than 17 ,000 large and small islands stretching along 1/8 of the length of equator from Malay Peninsula to Papua New Guinea, with a total land area of about 2 million sq.km. It is the world's 14th largest territorial unit. Java, Surriatera, Kalimantan, Sulawesi and Irian Jaya are the country's principal islands. Administratively, the country comprises 27 provinces which are divided into 63,000 villages.
Based on the population census of 1990, the total population of Indonesia at that time was182.6 millions. This makes Indonesia the fourth most populous country in the world. The large number of population is due to a relatively high annual population growth rate of 2.41 percent in the last decade (1980- 1990). Various Government programmes which have been launched, including the national family planning programme aimed at decreasing the fertility rate, have caused the annual growth in the last decade to decrease substantially. During the Fifth Five• y ear Development Plan (REPELITA V) the annual growth rate of population was 1. 97 percent.
