Geochemical prospecting for petroleum and natural gas deposits

Geochemical prospecting (or exploration) methods for petroleum and natural gas deposits at and near the surface of the ground and the offshore area have not achieved the popularity of geophysical methods. Geochemical methods have been used widely in both the united states and the soviet union, and many new discoveries have been reposrted from these two countries. Recently offshore geochemical prospecting methods for petroleum have been used successfully. Geochemical prospecting methods for oil and gas were first tried by Laubmeyer in 1929. Some scientist, even in the present day, believe that hydrocarbons probably cannot migrate from underground reservoirs to the surface of the ground where, using high-sensitivity analytical instrumens the hydrocarbons may be analysed.
