Asia-Pasific Economic Cooperation - Nama Orang;

In the 1960s 'and early 1970s the growth in world seaborne coal trade mainly reflected the increasing • demand for steel. Following the oil shocks of the 970s, the further strong growth in world coal trade been driven primarily by the rapid growth in cctricity generating capacity. Consequently, while World coal trade doubled between 1978 and 1994, ermal coal trade increased almost fivefold. This rapid, electricity sector driven growth is ejected to continue through the medium term to 2000-01. World seaborne trade in black coal is ejected to increase by over 29 per cent from the 1995-96 level to 534 million tonnes in 2000-01, and almost 90 per cent of this increase will be accounted for by thermal coal. The increase in demand will be
concentrated in regions with insufficient thermal coal resources to satisfy domestic requirements, which will mainly be economies in • South and East Asia, and in regions where subsidised, high cost coal production is being reduced, mainly in the European Union. Metallurgical coal trade, in contrast, is projected to rise only slightly through this period, • from almost 167 million tonnes in 1995-96 to around 180 million tonnes in 2000-01. Given these contrasting growth rates, the focus in this paper is principally on the outlook for thermal coal trade.
