Proceeding of symposium on japan-indonesia idndr project volvanology, tectonis, flood and sediment hazards
Natural disasters are the, most serious potential threats to human being and their environments. Japan and Indonesia have the same type of natural hazards because of their similarity in tectonic setting. This was a major factor motivating the establishment of cooperative programs between Japan and Indonesia to understand the natural phenomena and their mitigation.
The concept of IDNDR had originally been proposed by Dr. F. Press, President of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences in 1984. He started that we should make the last ten years of the 201h century "the Decade of International Disasters Reduction" and should cooperate with one another to mitigate natural disasters in the world. The Disaster Prevention Research Institute (DPRI) of Kyoto University agreed to join the international movement of IDNDR and research projects under the support of the Ministry of Education, Science, Sports and Culture by organizing a special international project in 1991. Thus• -the project, "Study of Prediction and Mitigation of Natural Disasters in Eastern Asia (Indonesia and China)" started as a three year program. The next five year joint research program started in 1994 with the overall title "Prediction and Mitigation of Natural Disasters in Indonesia and China". The main subjects in Indonesia were (1) Igneous Process and Tectonics, and (2) Disasters Caused by Floods and Geomorphological Change and Their Mitigation. These projects mainly covered topics in geoscience and civil engineering. For both Indonesia and Japan, these activities are very strategic for the purpose of mitigation of natural hazards. Through this symposium the scientists of the two countries were encouraged to exchange their findings in studies of volcanic, tectonic and crustal movements, earthquake and seismotectonics, flood, sedimentation, coastal erosion and drought hazards with the aim of improving strategies, methodologies, and techniques of our future activities in Indonesia.
Symposium on Japan-Indonesia IDNDR Project -Volcanology, Tectonics, Flood and Sediment Hazards- was held on September 21 - 23, 1998 at the Holiday Inn Hotel in Bandung, Indonesia, with about 200 participants from both countries, with 5 keynote lectures and 51 scientific papers presented on volcanology, tectonics, beach erosion, floods. The proceedings consist of more than 50 full papers presented during the symposium and is expected to be helpful for future studies and the extension of collaboration between both countries.
