Proceedings of the 7th international peat congress Dublin volume 4
Above--ground blomass and primary production values for 40 sites representing 22 virgin mire types which occur in the southern boreal vegetation zone in finland are presenterd. Eight ameliorated sites are included in the material. The biomass ranges between 360 - 20 270 g/m2 and is strongly correlated with stem volume on forested sites. Total annual production on all the sites from open fens to petland forests varies less (190 -1370 g/m2). It is not clearly correlated with the nutritional trophy or moisture gradients which determine the mire types. These gradients have a strong effect on the quality to biomass and production, i.e. The distribution between vegetation lavers, life-forms and ecological groups. Forest amelioration increases the tree biomass at a rate which depends on limiting factors that have already been studied in peatland forestry. At the same time the quality distribution of biomass and production becomes forest like.
