Scripta manent, verba volant - said a Greek philosopher which means that what is written stays and what has been' said will evaporate. All of the presentations on Indonesian Mining will be forgotten unless they are documented and can be used for future reference. In 1997, the Indonesian Mining Association (IMA) in cooperation with P.T. Pamerindo BuanaAbadi organized its "Mining Indonesia" conference and exhibitions. The event was well attended by about 300 participants both from Indonesia and abroad. IMA has selected several papers which it considers as the highlights of the 1997 event. In 1996, IMA hosted the 5th Asia Pacific Mining Conference and Exhibition organized by Oriental Western Promotion which was attended by more than 400 participants. Some of the relevant papers dealing with developments in the Indonesian Mining sector are also included in this volume.
The mining sector has clearly demonstrated it's important contribution to the economy of Indonesia. It is a sector whose products (copper, Gold, Silver, Tin, Nickel, Coal and industrial minerals) are sold on the international market and therefore generate much need foreign currency for the country durin~ this turbulent period that began in mid 1997.
