Generation and maturation of hydrocarbons in sedimentary basins
Over the past several decades the philosophy of exploration for oil and gas has pro• gressively changed from drilling on surface seepages to the concept of structural traps, com• plemented later by considerations of sedimentology in relation to the development of reser• voirs, which led to the concept of stratigraphic traps. In more recent times, however, because the more obvious drilling targets have been tested, attention has been directed to deeper and less obvious targets on land and to prospects in offshore areas for which considerably greater expenditures and greater technical difficulties are involved.
In later years, advances in the study of organic geochemistry have resulted in greatly improved knowledge of the factors controlling the generation of hydrocarbons in sedimentary basins and the mechanisms which gave rise to their migraton and ultimate accumulation in reservoirs. Those results are now being used to assist the refinement of exploration methods by defining the most favourable target areas for exploration in sedimentary basins (Tissot and Welte, 1978).
