Geochemical practice in the exploration of soil and gas
Nonnally oil or gas occupy only a small fraction of the total pore -1. volume in the subsut!l:-ece; the rest of the spJlce contains water_.Sometimes the water associated with the oil is fresh, but usually it is salty. In general, the deeper and older a rock is, the saltier the water it contains. Thr origin of oil-field brines is not well understood. Presumably
they are the fossil remains of the sea water in which the sediment,s were deposited. However; they are always quite different from sea water chemically. Inasmuch as oil must form and migrate in this wateiy environment, the nature and behaviour of subsurface water can tell us much about the origin and accumulation of oil. The analyses of representative formation water samples from drill-stem tests on exploration, or from field development wells, can prove very valuable to geologists.
