Southeast Asia is a rapidly growing part of the developing world. The economic growth rates recorded here are two or three times those recorded in industrialized countries. Moreover the nature of growth in South East Asian countries is very energy intensive, driven by the industrialization of the economy and the increase in economic specialization and ist concomitant demands for transport. The population of the ASEAN region is growing rapidly and there are irresistible (and quite legitimate) demands for rapidly increasing standards of living accompanied by higher energy use in the domestic environment and in personal transport. Lastly the world-wide trend to urbanization is strongly evident in the region and cities which are generally more demanding for service in term of direct and indirect energy use.
