Physical Properties of Specimen From Sulphide Deposits In Quebec
STUDIEI, related to the measurement of the physical properties of sulphide ores and host rocks of hase metal orebodies from the Province of Quebec are at least scarce if not non-existent. Very few privute companies have conducted research of this typo on their own properties and, if clone, the :-it.11di1•:-1 worn either too specific in nature or were kept confidP11- tial. Studies related to the measurement of t lu- phy• sical properties of rocks and sulphide pres are nunur• ous in Canada, the United States and Europe. l•'11r a rather extensive bibliography on the subject, the reader is referred to Laroche (1972). Considering the large amount of geophysical explo• ration carried out by the mining .industry, it appeared that a thorough study of the physical prnpert i1•:-1 of ore deposits in Quebec was warranted. In order to assess in a more accurate way the over-al! phvs ir-n! properties of a given, base metal orebodv, the dfed,; of which are detected by geophysical prospert.i ni methods, laboratory determinations of the physical properties of its constituent parts were needed. A good knowledge of the true or at least relative values of the physical properties of the various ore deposits will allow for a better Interpretation of ground and airborne geophysical surveys. Regions Ii ke Abitibi have been prospected in detail down to a depth of 300 to 400 feet (100 m) using standard geophysical techniques. Such regions still have a large mining potential and require the use of geophysicul prospecting techniques which have a greater depth of penetration (e.g, new and more efficient airborne methods, down-the-hole methods such as mise-a-la• masse, high-power induced polarization techniques. resistivity soundings at greater depth, and new inter• pretation techniques of gravity and ground or aero• magnetic data). One can best orient exploration pro• grams using the physical properties measured in the laboratory combined with geological and geoph_vsical information already available in these areas. Also. such study allows comparisons with other regions which are not as extensively explored, but which have similar characteristics in their geological or mining settings. In addition, the information obtained from the measurement of the physical properties may jus• tify the choice of one specific type of instrumentation rather than another in geophysical prospecting.
