Physical Aspects of Natural Catastrophes
Man tends to term any change in his environment that affects his works or his life in an unwanted fashion as a "catastrophe". Therefore, catastrophes may not only be represented by sudden violent events, such as earthquakes or volcanic eruptions, but also by the gradual slow drowning of a city like Venice a process that may take centuries to run its course. In this book we shall deal only with (more or less) natural catastrophes: the wilful de-struction of a city by a hydrogen bomb will be left out of consid-eration. Nevertheless, events triggered unintentionally by artificial changes in the environment will be considered: the type of event we have in mind is, for instance, represented by the Vajont slide which was (apparently) triggered by the filling up of an artificial lake below a barely stable slope.
