Evidence of Early Habitation In The Coastal of Banten
Volcanic eruptions may affect the socio cultural life of societies which happen to be in the neighbourhood of volcanoes.
This is known from some parts of the world where such disasters happened and were recorded. There also historically recorded eruptions in Indonesia. For example in the Nagarakrtagana, a panygeric written by the court poet Prapance for his Lord, King Hayam Wuruk of Majapahit in 1365, it is recorded that the Kanpud (Mount Kelud in Blitar, East Java) crupted when the king was born. In the Pararaton, a book written in a later period, some cruptions are also mentioned. However there has been no recording of the disaster, supposed to be the eruption of Mount Merapi around A.D. 930, that forced the ruler of Mataran in Central Java to move the centre of power to East Java (Boechari, 1976). Fortunately there is evidence that such an eruption did indeed happen, for Candi Sambisari (near Hotel Anbarukmo) has been excavated fron approxi- mately 5 meters of soil, originally sand from an eruption. The site of the royal palace has not been found yet, but Medari might have been the place according to an architect (personal communication). There some statues and remains of stone walls have been found. The site is also in the regency of Sleman such as Sambisari. In Eastern Java a few years ago the owner of a house, who was digging a well, discovered bricks which after excavation turned out to be part of a brick temple, made in the style of Majapahit (14th century).
