Geoscience has a vital role to play in underpinning the social, economic and indus• trial infrastructure of nations, now and as we move into the 21st century. If we are to have the mineral and energy resources to sustain a global population of 10 billion or more; if we are to manage the fragile environment we cohabit, mitigate against the effects of severe natural hazards, and come to terms with global warming; if we are to maintain fertil~ soils for crops and adequate supplies of clean drinking water for all; if we are to bring each nation and all her people to enjoy the standard and quality of life that only a few now have, then there is no question that geoscientists have their work cut out for years to come. It is equally evident, therefore, that time effort and resources must be put into geo•
science education and training. This was the clear rationale behind the international conference that spawned this volume. Convened by one of the editors (DAVS) in Southampton, England, in April 1993, it became the first such meeting of truly inter• national scope across the breadth of geoscience education. Some 250 participants from 50 different countries world-wide attended - everywhere from Croatia to Viet• nam, Lithuania to Columbia, Senegal to the Philippines.
Most participants gave presentations (recorded in the Conference Abstract Volume). Many of these were submitted for publication, so that following lengthy edito• rial work, much of the original energy and insight, good practise and rewarding dia• logue has been captured in this Proceedings Volume.
