The Submarine Flank Eruption of Mt. Ili Werung
During the months of June until August 1974 three volcanic peaks emerged above sea level, after the occurrence of submarine activities which started since the first week of December 1973. These small volcanic islets, located about 700 meters southeast off the coast of Lomblen island, was given the name of "Hobal volcano" by local inhabitants. Investigations carried out on May 9, 1976, discovered that "Hobal volcano" had disappeared from the sea surface. On the same locality many bluish green coloured water bubbles were observed. Petroeschevsky (1948) put attention already to this particular phenomenon, and he stated also on the possibility of the birth of a submarine volcano on this spot.
