Report on Reconnaissance Survey on Kalimantan Coal Block V (Area 2) Indonesia (August - September 1981)
The reconnaissance area is underlain by rocks ranging from Mesozoic to Neogene age. The structure is relatively simp'le over most of the area and comprises a broad southward plunging anticlinorium of sediments with a' basement core of Mesozoic metamorphics and igneous rocks. The regional dips off the flanks of the anticlinorium are generally regular with some undulations, and moderately gentle. In the far eastern sector the structure is more complicated, with numerous sub-meridional faults disrupting the rocks.
Coal occurs in all three sedimentary groups identified in the area but the Palaeogene coal is t~e only coal that is considered to have any possible economic significance. The quality in hand specimen is mostly lustrous with no evidence of very high ash. A numb~ of seams of economic thickness with moderate dips have been located and these have the potential for extending over significant strike lengths.
