On 7th December 1959 a project entitled 'Geological Sur• vey' (no. 1 1.41 .003) was approved by the Commission of the European Economic Community, for the account of the Development Fund for Overseas Countries and Territories .of the Community. For this purpose the Netherlands Government and the Community concluded the Financing Agreement no. 27/N/Nu/s/58 on 6th May 1960. The execution of the project which aimed at investigating the occur• rence, if any, of economically exploitable minerals (with the exception of oil) in Netherlands New Guinea', was entrusted to the 'Stichtiug Geologisch Onderzoek Nederlands-Nicuw• Guinea • ( Foundation Geological I nvcst igat ion Netherlands New Guinea) at The Hague.
Before a European Economic Community project had been designed, preliminary activities for a geological investiga• tion in Netherlands New Guinea had already been effected by order of the Netherlands Government and, thereafter, by the above-mentioned Foundation. Even before• the project was granted approval, a first exploration group was sent to cthcrlands New Guinea. The investigations on behalf of the project cannot be studied, therefore, independently of this preliminary examination, but should be considered as an entity with it. These investigations were financed by the etherlands Government until rst January r959, partly till 1st January 1960. Thereafter the necessary moneys were practically entirely supplied by the Fund or the Community (see fig. 1 ). During the preliminary activities various methods of investigation were examined as to their applicability inNethcrlands New .'Guinca, while 147,000 km" of Netherlands (see fig. 3). Based on these photogeological results, areas were chosen offering the best prospects as regards the oc• currence of mineralizations (sec fig. 4).
In one of these areas, viz. NE Vogelkop, the exploration was started on Ioth August 1959. From October 1961, the field operations were supported by two helicopters of the Alouet• te II type. On 6th September 1962 the exploration had to be stopped in consequence of the transfer of Netherlands New Guinea to the Un'*
