Since the outbreak of the Pacific war until 1966-1967 no
systerratic mineral exploration of significance had ever been carried out in Indonesia. Although there has always been great interest in Indonesia's mineral potential, economic and political conditions at that time were not conductive for ~i vate under• takings while some exploration activities undertaken by the Go• vernrrent or State enterprises were only limited to certain pro• jects or targets.
In the late 1950-ies, Indonesia's mineral production outside
oil and gas was fully in the hand of the Governrrent. Production carre from old mines, previously operated by the Dutch. In the early 1960-ies, rrost of these mines were operating under very dif- ficult conditions. There were hardly any additional invesment for replacement or.rehabilitation, and the year 1966 recorded an all ti.Ire low perfornance for rrost existing mines.
