Direct Reduction of New Zealand Ironsand Concentrates Part 2 - Solid Reductants

G.D McAdam - Nama Orang;

Variables in the reduction of New Ze.aland ironsand concentrate: pellets, by solid carbonaceous materials, were investigated on a. Mettler thermobalance. supplemented by metallurgical examination. Weight changes were translated into rates of reaction, using iron analysis to fix the end points. Carbonaceous bed reduction of pellets was a function of temperature and rate of heating, dependent on the particle size of the reductant, and proportional to the pellet size. In a carbon bed, the rate of reduction was effectively" that of carbon monoxide; this is probably a fair representation of reduction rates in a commercial kiln. Improved reduction rates in char, or coal beds were attributed to hydrogen evolved at elevated temperatures, alongside the carbon monoxide generated at the pellet surface. Sintered pellets reacted faster than green pellets at all temperatures.
Reductants mixed in the pellets accelerated the rate of reduction, particularly if the ironsand particles were preoxidised, The controlling mechanism differs from that in a red - bed, as the time for conversion varies-as the square of the pellet diameter. Part. e size of the ore is not critical. The rate of reduction is temperature dependent, but is less sensitive to the rate of heating. The performance of pellets with internal reductants is worth exploiting on a commercial scale, if some of the present dis• advantages can be overcome.
