A number of chromite occurrences are known to exist in the Indonesian archipelago. The most recent investigations were undertaken by the Directorate of Min. eral Resources in cooperation with the Federal r°ns- titute For•Geosciences and Natural Resources of Germany in the Ophiolite Complexes. The survey led to the discovery of several mineralized zones in Halmahera, Gebe and Southeast Kalirnantan.
More detailed investigation, done along the Bob~is Ophiolite zones in Kalimantan, located 42 chromite occurrences. Most of the chromite depo• sits occur as loose bloks ranging from 1 cm to 75 cm in diameter, spread on the surface or as floats in the lateritic soils. Some deposits are in-situ below the ubiquitous lateritic cover. Microprobe and X-RF analyses of chromite samples from rnasive and dis- seminated ore from Kalimantan reveal the following composition 29-54%
