Paleomagnetic studies of lams from the island of Hawaii have established the following: (1) All lavas now exposed on the island are less than 1 million years old (Pleisto• cene). (2) The present absence of nondipole field components in the central Pacific area is a relatively permanent feature, having lasted at least several hundred thousand years. (3) Dur• ing the last million years, the main dipole field has wobbled, with periods up to 105 years and with amplitudes greater than 15°. (4) The average orientation of the main dipole field during the last 1 million years was displaced 5° from the present rotation axis.
