The Minerals Report Indonesia
The mineral sector is a major source of Indonesia's non-oil/gas exports. Although the sale of ore and ore concentrates contributed only 3.6 percent
to total Indonesian foreign exchange earnings in 1984, the dollar value of
these exports, US$747million, is significant.
During the past, year, the.minerals industry has suffered from weak international prices. Tin, copper concentrate, and nickel, Indonesia's three principal mineral exports, suffered the most severe setbacks. In
1984, export earnings of tin fell by 15.1 percent and copper concentrate by
10. 7 percent. The export earnings of nickel mat.ce declined by 3. 3 percent despite a 33 percent increase in its export, volume.
In 1980, with exports worth $51..8million, tin was Indonesia's biggest
foreign exchange earner after oil; by 1984, the value of tin exports slumped sharply to only $273 million, and ranked fifth behind oil, natural gas,
timber and rubber. Nickel exports (nickel matte, ferro nickel and nickel
ore), valued at $205 million in 1980, dropped to approximately $145 million in 1984. Total copper export earnings fell from $153 million to $110 million during the same period. Despite the precipitous fall in tin revenues, the performance of the other mineral exports such as bauxite and coal maintained the total earnings picture for 1984 at approhmately 1983 levels.
