Monitoring Volcanic Eruptions using weather Satellite in Indonesia the Colo Eruption
After eigthy five years of inactivity, the Colo Volcano (Indonesia, 0.175, 120.61E) experienced a series of violent eruptions which lasted from july 8 to August 22.. 1983. These eruptions destroyed most of the settlements, vegetation and animal life on the small island of Una-Una on which the volcano is located. The inhabitants were fortunately evacuated before the most destructive events took place. Because of the danger caused by nuees ardentes and tephra falls, most of the observations made during the active phase of the Colo eruption were carried out from the neighboring island of Togian located 40 km southeast of Una-Una or, at the closest ,from an off-shore vessel. Occasional observations were also made from small airplanes. In addition, satellite imagery provided a primary source of information on the occurence of individual events (EDS, 1983).
