Indonesian Dutch Snellius II Expedition Theme 4 Coral Beefs In The Southwestern Part Of East Indonesia
In the framework of an expedition with a limited duration only a small number of aspects of the extremely complicated coral reef biology and geology can be studied and only a small number of the numerous coral reef areas of Eastern Indonesia can be investigated. Consequently a choice has been made, based on an identification of interesiing or important problems, o~ the avail~bility .of scientific expertise in Indonesia and the Netherlands, and on the availability of equipment and shiptime or the 'practical feasibi Li tv in genet-al.Because of lack of space on board and because of different research methods, the proqramme has to be executed during two successive cruises. The first cruise had a more exploratory character, with research that can be executed rather rapidly and investigations which benefit most. from visits to a variety of environments. The second cruise will be dedicated to research for which more time is needed ~t any one locality, including the study of functional aspects for which longer time series are essential, and other in-depth studies. During the first cruise special attention was aiven to the selection of localities were these studies can be made. For instance good reefs, sea grass fields and fossil reets were located that are promising for in-depth studies.
