Gravity Surveys In Indonesia
The discovery of the- negative belt of gravity anomalies along the trenches in Indonesia by Vening Meinesz has awakened geologists and geophysicists to developing ideas of,the formation of island arc systems and mountain building processes. The modern tectonics which is still, according to the author, a hypothesis should be proved, although s~e geophysical results show evidences to strengthen the hypothesis. Until presently, various geophysical operations, mostly; refraction work, reflection, gravity, magnetics, and some heatflow studies in the offshore areas have been done, or, are still underway, by foreign scientific institution and also by oil companies. Systematic land gTavity surveys are being done by the Geologi- cal Survey of Indonesia (GSI). Besides gravity surveys for scientific purposes, a large amount of gravity surveys are conducted by oil companies for locating structures related to hydrocarbon occurrences. These surveys, however, are isolated ones being unconnected between individual block of areas. Gravity data produced from these surveys, therefore, should be checked for their accuracy and stored for further analyses for compilation.
