COUNTRY UPDATES OF GEOTHERMAL DEVELOPMENT IN INDONESIA

lndonesia is the fourth most populous country in the world after China, lndia and the
United States of America, with some 260 miltion people and 17,000 islands
separated into 34 different provinces. The country has a thirst for energy due to an
expanding e@nomy, a rising middle class and rapid urbanization. lt is located in the
heart of the world's most dynamic economic region and is by far the largest economy
in Southeast Asia, accounting for nearly 40o/o ol total energy use among ASEAN
members. lndonesia located in a tropical climate. While iFer" is variety in the
weather on different lndonesian islands, in general the climate throughout lndonesia
is hot and humid. lndonesia only has two seasons, dry and rainy seasons. The rainy
season usually runs from around November through to March. The dry season is
normally from late May through to October.
lndonesia is one of the emerging mad(et economies of the world and has the largest
economy in Southeast Asia. Three main sectors which build the lndonesian
economy : agriculture, industry and services. Agriculture is a key sector which
contributed to 14.43 % of nation's gross domestic product (GDP), lndustry sector
contributing about 47o/o of nation's GDP and services sector contributes 42o/o of lhe
GDP.
ln 2016, The lndonesian govemment plans to spend a total of IDR 2,200 trillion
(approx. USD $165.4 billion), while govemment revenue is expected to reach IDR
1,900 trillion (approx. USD $143 billion). The lndonesian govemment targets to
narrolil the budget deficit to between 1.9 and 2 percent of GDP in 2016 and keep
focus to prioritize spending on infrastructure development as well as energy and
food.
Since the 20th century lndonesia has been heavily dependent on fossil fuels as a
revenue generator and prime mover of the economy. After the Conference of Parties
21 (CAP21) in 2015 and the ratification of the Paris Agreement in November 2016,
lndonesia has been giving more attention to renewable energy as a way to satisff
local demand and tackle climate-related issues.
